FEATURING DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER

Deborah Lipstadt

Dr. Deborah E. Lipstadt is Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies at Emory University in Atlanta. She is best known as author of the books Denying the Holocaust, History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier and The Eichmann Trial.

Her renowned History on Trial is the story of her libel trial in London against David Irving, who sued her for calling him a Holocaust denier and right-wing extremist. Dr. Lipstadt’s book won the 2006 National Jewish Book Award, and the recently released movie Denial is based on this important work.

At Emory, Dr. Lipstadt created the Institute for Jewish Studies and was its first director from 1998–2008. She directs the web site known as Holocaust Denial on Trial, which contains answers to frequent claims made by deniers. The site can be accessed at hdot.org.

Dr. Lipstadt was a historical consultant to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and helped design the section dedicated to the U.S. response to the Holocaust. She was appointed by President Clinton to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, on which she served two terms. She was also a member of the Council’s Executive Committee and chaired the Holocaust Museum’s Educational and Academic Committees. On July 7, 2011, President Barack Obama re-appointed Dr. Lipstadt to the Council.

Dr. Lipstadt received her B.A. from City College of New York and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Brandeis University.
