Friday, February 10, 2017 • 14 Shevat 5777
7:30 PM - 9:00 PMJoin us for our annual “Sabbath of Song” worship service on Friday evening February 10, 2017 at 7:30 PM. The service called in Hebrew “Shabbat Sheera” is a celebration of the vocal arts. The “Lahaka” adult choir under director of Marek Rachelski will present musical selections throughout our service
Shabbat Sheera commemorates the ancient Israelites’ escape from Egyptian bondage as recorded in the Book of Exodus. According to the Exodus account, the moment the Israelites crossed the Sea of Reeds and left slavery behind, they sang for joy. The text of the song is preserved in the Biblical account, although the original melody that they sang is lost. Thus, for centuries and millennia since, Jews have gathered on the Sabbath when this portion of the Bible is read, and sing the Israelites’ song and other prayers using traditional and contemporary melodies.
Our special Shabbat Sheera – Sabbath of Song – service will be infused with beautiful singing presented by our amazing Lahaka choir. Through the uplifting melodies and songs, worshippers will celebrate the ancient and ongoing mission of the Jewish people to seek freedom for all humanity.
